1. In a nutshell what is PRP Hair Rejuvenation?
PRP hair rejuvenation is a minimally invasive, non-surgical and safe option to promote the growth of hair.
PRP stands for Platelet- rich plasma, a protein in the blood.
PRP hair rejuvenation stimulates hair growth by injecting our own blood into the scalp using microneedling.
The blood before microneedling onto the scalp is centrifuged to produce the stem cells and blood products needed that assist in growth and healing.
2. Who is suitable for PRP Hair Rejuvenation?
Patients who are experiencing hair loss or hair thinning are a good candidate for PRP hair rejuvenation.
This treatment works best on patients who are in the early stages of hair loss.
It is important for patients to know that PRP is not a cure for hair loss.
Patients who are not suitable for PRP are those who have a history of: heavy smoking, drug and alcohol use.
Patients with conditions such as: sepsis, liver disease, cancer, skin diseases, metabolic diseases, platelet dysfunction syndrome, infections are also not suitable.
3. What will happen during my appointment?
At Dental & Skin we offer free consultations, during which we will discuss your desired results and your history of hair loss to determine whether you are a good candidate.
Before starting treatment medical history and consent forms will be completed.
The next step is to take blood from your arm using a needle like you were having a blood test. The blood will be centrifuged to remove the PRP from the rest of your blood.
The PRP is then injected into the scalp by microneedling to stimulate the hair follicles, promote tissue regeneration and cellular growth.
The patient’s hair will then be washed and aloe vera will be applied.
4. Is it safe?
PRP hair rejuvenation is safe as there is no risk of infection or rejection as we are using the patient’s own blood.
PRP takes the patient’s own blood and injects the good proteins and cells back into the scalp to promote hair growth.
5. What are the side effects?
There is little to no down time with PRP hair rejuvenation and most patients can return to work immediately after treatment.
The injuries to the skin that are created by the needle do not cause bruising or swelling, as they heal within 24 hours.
6. When will I see the results?
Results will be seen within 2 to 3 months.
It is recommended that treatment is performed every month for 3 or 4 months and then repeated once every 4 to 6 months. Your doctor will inform you how many treatments you need during your consultation.
7. Post Treatment Care
After your microneedling treatment, we advise all patients to use sunscreen, to protect and hydrate your scalp. Patients should also stay out of direct sunlight for a few weeks.
Patients should not exfoliate their scalp for at least a week after microneedling treatment.
