Veneers
1. In a nutshell what are dental veneers?
A dental veneer is a cosmetic fix to improving the appearance of your teeth, typically used for smile design. Various types of veneers are available in the market. It works by covering the front surface of your tooth with a thin layer of porcelain to disguise any irregularities or discolouration.
A dental veneer is a long term and quick solution to improving the appearance of your smile with a custom made, thin and aesthetically pleasing material that is carefully and personally bonded to your tooth.
2. How do I choose which veneer is best for me?
At Dental & Skin our dentist will help you choose the veneer most suitable for you with a thorough assessment of the articulatory system which includes; the jaw joint, facial muscles, the health and function of your teeth and gums, alongside occlusion (the contact between upper and lower teeth). Understanding the exposure of your teeth during expression and speech is also important when working alongside your desired results and acquirement.
3. How do I know if I am suitable for veneers?
You are most likely to be suitable for veneers if you have one or more of the following which veneers can correct or achieve :
- Small and misshapen teeth
- Gummy Smiles
- Protruding and discoloured teeth
- Crooked and uneven teeth
- Missing incisors
- Gaps in the teeth
- Worn and chipped teeth
- Fluorosis
- Replacing existing veneers
- Perfect smile
4. How many appointments do I need?
This would depend on the total number of veneers being made. At Dental & Skin for a complete smile makeover we would need about 4 appointments. The first one to assess, plan and discuss options. The second appointment would be for tooth preparation and measurements, the third appointment would be to try out temporary veneers and the fourth appointment would be for the final fit of veneers. If we are making just one or two veneers, the treatment can be completed in two visits.
5. How long do veneers last?
On average veneers last for 10 years and here at Dental & Skin we have a 5 year guarantee on all veneers.
6. What types of veneers are there?
Lumineers
Lumineers are a well established product design, with a 30 year history of creating ultra thin veneers.
What are the advantages of Lumineers?
- When perfecting your smile natural looking teeth are the desired result and Lumineers provide this by using porcelain to create an aesthetically pleasing smile.
- Lumineers are both thin and very durable making their bonding to the tooth easy with little tooth reduction and patients can feel comfortable knowing their veneers will last a long time.
- During the procedure of applying your veneers there is no drilling and no need for temporary veneers, making the overall experience pain free.
- Lumineers are very natural in both appearance and in how they feel in the mouth. Patients are highly unlikely to be in discomfort after Lumineers have been bonded to the tooth.
- Post treatment care with Lumineers is not required, patients can continue to eat and drink as normal.
How are my Lumineers created and perfected?
After your consultation at Dental and Skin an impression of your upper and lower teeth will be taken. At the laboratory your veneers will be created and customised by looking at your impressions and photos.
At your next appointment once your veneers have arrived at the clinic our dentist will try on your veneers before they are bonded to your tooth. Once the patient and Dentist are both happy, your bite will then be checked and we will book you in for a review appointment to see how you are getting on in a few weeks time.
Durathin
Durathin are ultra thin veneers that are natural and aesthetically pleasing in design as they replicate your natural tooth colour. Durathin are made from a material called cerinate and whilst your veneers are being made in the laboratory, technicians can personalise them by making shade changes.
What are the advantages of Durathin?
- They are reversible; a patient can go back to their original smile if required and if no tooth re-structuring has been carried out.
- Ultra thin, durable and able to prevent unwanted tooth colours from coming through.
- Durathin veneers require no numbing when carrying out bonding and so is a painless treatment.
- To bond the veneers to your teeth only small amounts of your natural tooth would be needed to be restructured
Disadvantages
- For patients who require a huge amount of change to the shape and colour of their teeth Durathin is not ideal.
How are Durathin created and perfected?

7. Are there alternatives to veneers?
A dental veneer is a great option for patients who are looking to improve the appearance of their teeth and smile, and are willing to spend time to do this with a few appointments. While a veneer is a long term solution, there are alternative short term solutions.
These alternatives are a scale and polish and teeth whitening, both great options offered at Dental & Skin and provide instant short term results. A scale and polish can remove stains, plaque and tartar from your teeth, along with teeth whitening which will whiten your smile. We recommend the two treatments together for best results.
