1. In a nutshell what is Botox?
Botox (Botulinum Toxin) is a skin treatment used to reduce the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles, and in doing so prevents the signs of ageing.
Botox is a quick and convenient treatment to smooth out those lines without any need for surgery.
Botox has become a massively popular treatment all over the world, with 6 million treatments being carried out every year.
Botox is injected into the muscular tissue, and can only be administered by a trained doctor.
2. How does Botox work?
Botox works by preventing the muscles in the target areas from contracting. When Botox is injected there is no transfer of a signal from the nerve to the muscle telling them to contract.
It is this contraction of muscles, which occur on the face thousands of times a day which create wrinkles and lines.
After being treated with Botox you will still be able to laugh, smile and facial expressions will not disappear. There will however, be less movement in the treated areas, creating a smooth look.
3. How long after treatment will I see results?
The time between treatment and noticing the results does vary between patient to patient and the size of the muscles being treated.
The average time for Botox to work is between 24-72 hours.
4. How long do results last for?
The range of time that results last for does vary between patient to patient.
Most Botox treatments last between 2 and a half to 4 months.
5. Which areas can be treated?
At Dental & Skin the areas that we treat with Botox are: frown lines, forehead lines, crows feet, lower eyelid wrinkles, bunny lines, lip lines, chin, marionettes, gummy smile, jaw line reduction and axillary hyperhidrosis.
6. Are there risks or side effects?
There is always a risk of side effects with every treatment and Botox is no exception. However, possible side effects are short lived and not harmful.
In one to five percent of cases, there can be mild drooping of the eyelid or eyebrow, which usually goes away within two weeks. Only a very few patients experience slight bruising.
7. Post Treatment Advice/Care
After treatment patients can carry on with their normal daily routine.
We would advise patients to avoid heavy work outs for 24 hours and to avoid rubbing the treated area, this will avoid spreading the Botox to other areas of the face.
Patients can wear make-up straight away after having Botox treatment.
We would advise patients who have an event coming up, to book in for Botox at Dental & Skin 3-4 weeks before the event.
8. What are the different brands of Botox (Botulinum Toxin Type A)?
Azzalure is one of the oldest and most common brands of Botox, it has been available in the UK from the 90s and approved for cosmetic use in 2009.
Azzalure is most commonly used to prevent and treat the development of frown lines.
Bocouture is marketed under the brand name Xeomin, and has been available in the UK since 2008. Bocouture claims to be an advanced type of Botox Type A, due to that antibodies do not form when it is injected in high does. This means it has the advantage of longer lasting results.
Vistabel is the first type of Botox Type A to receive a cosmetic license in this country, and the first to receive a license when treating the crows feet. This type of Botox, like the rest works by preventing nerve endings sending a message to the muscles telling them to contract.
This type of Botox is manufactured by a French company called Ipsen, and has been around in the UK since the 90s gaining a cosmetic license in 2009. Dysport is marketed under the brand name Azzalure.
9. Can everyone have Botox?
We find that most patients are suitable to receive Botox treatment. However, Botox can not be carried out for women who are pregnant or breastfeeding.
Botox can also not be carried out on patients who have diseases related to muscle activity or, who have bleeding disorders.
