Micro Dermal Abrasion

1. In a nutshell what is microdermabrasion?

Microdermabrasion is a minimally invasive, chemical free, non surgical skin rejuvenation treatment.

Microdermabrasion is a mechanical skin exfoliation treatment which uses medical grade crystals to remove the top layer of the skin.

Our skin interprets this as an injury and instantly begins producing a new, refreshed layer of skin.

A diamond tip applicator is used to apply the crystals and a vacuum is used to clear them away, revealing a fresher, rejuvenated complexion.

2. Who is suitable for microdermabrasion?

At Dental & Skin we find that most patients are suitable for microdermabrasion treatment.

Patients who are concerned about; wrinkles, fine lines, age spots, melasma, acne scarring, sun damaged skin, blackheads, whiteheads and oily skin are great candidates for microdermabrasion.

Microdermabrasion is not suitable for patients who are pregnant or who have rosacea as well as patients who have visible blood vessels.

3. What are the benefits?

One of the main benefits of microdermabrasion is that it is not invasive and no chemicals are used. It simply rejuvenates your skin by exfoliation.

Microdermabrasion helps with improving the skin’s appearance and elasticity by stimulating the body’s blood flow which improves circulation.

Microdermabrasion increases the absorption of other products into your skin. This is particularly useful for patients who are applying topical acne cream.

Microdermabrasion helps to unclog pores and reduce their size.

Microdermabrasion does not have any recovery time and is one of the safest procedures for rejuvenating your skin.

Treatment time is 30 minutes, this enables patients to return to their daily activities quickly.

4. What will happen at my appointment?

At your appointment we will first assess your skin and discuss your concerns.

We will then complete medical history and consent forms.

Before treatment all make up will be removed and skin will be cleansed. We will then apply a prep solution to your skin and a highly controlled flow of medical grade crystals will be passed over your skin with a diamond tipped device.

These crystals will exfoliate your skin.

After this the crystals will be vacuumed away and in doing so the top layer of your skin will be removed to reveal a fresher, rejuvenated and even tone complexion.

We will then apply a antioxidant moisturizer and SPF to hydrate your skin.

5. Will I experience any pain?

Most patients do not experience any pain during microdermabrasion treatment, however, you may feel some discomfort.

Numbing creams and local anaesthetics are not necessary for this particular treatment.

6. What is a diamond tipped handpiece?

A diamond tipped handpiece is the device used to apply the crystals to your skin.

The handpiece allows the doctor to adjust the pressure to your skin and then vacuum them away.

A diamond tipped handpiece has the advantage of being a great applicator for sensitive areas of the face, such as around the eyes and mouth.

7. Post Treatment advice

There is no downtime after microdermabrasion treatment and most patients can return to work or normal daily activities.

After treatment skin may be slightly red and sore.

It is important to keep your skin hydrated after treatment and gently apply any moisturizer or makeup. Skin should be protected from sunlight for a few weeks after treatment as skin may become more sensitive.

Acne medications should be avoided for a day or two after treatment.

8. When will I see the results?

Results will be noticeable immediately after treatment.

During your consultation our doctor will recommend how many treatments of microdermabrasion you will need.

However, we do recommend a total of 6 treatments, spaced 2 weeks apart and then topped up every 4 to 6 weeks.
