Dental Fillings

1. In a nutshell what is a dental filling?

A dental filling is a restorative dental treatment to repair the surface of a tooth suffering from tooth decay.

Dental fillings allow for patients to return to their normal eating and drinking function without any pain.

A dental filling is the most common treatment to alleviate pain from a cavity. They are vital part of today’s dentistry preventing a potential tooth loss.

2. What are the advantages of a dental filling?

A dental filling will restore the biting and chewing force that can be applied to your tooth.

At Dental & Skin we offer white composite fillings which create a natural appearance for your smile and blend to your tooth colour.

White composite fillings when fitted have a strong bond to your tooth, this means that less tooth structure needs to be removed and less drilling is needed for preparation.

Patients can feel confident with composite fillings that they won’t fall out because of their strong bond and durability.

3. Why do I need a filling?

Most patients require a dental filling when their tooth has suffered from decay or trauma. It is important to fill the tooth to restore normal eating habits, alleviate pain and prevent further treatment.

If you are experiencing pain with a tooth you may also need a filling, so it is important you book in with your dentist to save your tooth.

Patients who have chipped their tooth will also require a filling.

4. How long will the filling last?

We offer a 5 year guarantee on all our white composite fillings as we are confident in the materials we use. Terms and conditions apply.

5. Which material will my filling be made from?

At Dental & Skin we offer white composite fillings to restore your tooth and create a natural appearance. We use proven and well researched composite material from 3M. Our composite system is called Filtek Supreme EXT. This is one of the best composite system providing optimum strength and colour match.

White composite fillings are more advantageous than silver amalgam fillings which are not aesthetic and do not have as great a bonding force.

6. What will happen during my appointment?

At your appointment we will first carry out an exam and x-rays to determine if a filling is needed, as well as assessing your general oral health.

After this, we will create for you a treatment plan with any treatment needed with the prices included.

We will then sign the filling consent form.

We will then use local anaesthetic to numb the area where the filling will be and carry out treatment for you. On some occasions fillings can be carried out without any local anaesthetic, especially if they do not require removal of decayed tooth tissue.

One completed, we will inform you of aftercare instructions and invite you back to the clinic in 6 months time for your next dental check up.

7. Will I experience any pain?

We find that most patients do not experience any pain during treatment for a filling. We will numb the area before treatment and if a patient is uncomfortable we can use more anaesthetic.

We are experienced in dealing with nervous patients and will accomodate all of your dental needs.

We recommend that you bring in your headphone with music to help you relax during treatment.

8. Why do dental fillings fail?

The most common reason why a dental filling fails is due to secondary decay, this is when a filled tooth requires retreatment due to decay returning. This is the most common reason nationally why we have to replace an existing filling. Other reasons are wear and cracks forming, which are caused by the chewing forces we apply to our teeth everyday.

Dental fillings can also fail due to teeth grinding and clenching.

It is important to attend dental exams regularly so your dentist can identify any early signs of a filling failing.
